Climbing Magnolias
Magnolias are meant
to rise through,
limbs perfectly placed
for you and as many friends
as life has been
kind enough to grant you.
I recommend the one
one street over,
otherwise, you’ll just have a view
of the lawn you’ve
got to mow later.
That’s not what
Saturdays are meant for, exactly.
Once you’re up in it,
a magnolia turns
cathedrelic. Is that even
a word? I’ll ask Clarke
about it, even so,
it ought to be,
as the ascent reveals it.
Elaborate arches
of branch and sky,
you and I perched
like gargoyles,
about and not about to fly.
